The Department of Economics was among the four earliest faculties
in the School of Economics since its establishment in 1985. In 1999,
the department was designated by the Ministry of Education (I thought
it should be Ministry of Education, but we need to check to confirm.)
as one of the key sites for economics education in China.
Currently the department consists of five teaching and research groups,
including that for macroeconomics, microeconomics, political economy,
quantitative economics, and history of economy and economic thoughts.
The department¡¯s graduate program offers master and doctoral degrees
in the fields of political economy, western economics, history of
economic theories and history of Chinese economic thoughts. Among
them the political economy field was designated by the Ministry of
Education (again, we need to check if it is indeed Ministry of Education)
as one of the key academic units at the state level while the western
economics field was honored at the provincial level.
Presently the department has eight professors, seven associate professors
and six assistant professors. They offer advanced courses to the students
of the department as well as introductory courses to the entire school.
In recent years, the faculty conducted of a series of research projects
sponsored by the state and ministries, among which many had received
awards from the government. The department plays an important role
in both the academia and in the government¡¯s policy making.
The department aims at training students with solid knowledge of economics
theories and strong ability in practice. The graduates may expect
to work in the government for policy making as well as for teaching
and research positions in higher education institutions. The graduate
may also pursue opportunities in the private sector or continue their
education in graduate schools. The students are offered four types
of courses: economic theories, history of economy and economic thoughts,
applied economics, and economic analytical tools. In those courses,
the students are exposed to cutting-edge ideas and methods. To encourage
independent research by the students and enhance their writing skills,
in 1999 the department introduced the student summer research program,
in which the faculty members work closely with the students to provide
guidance. |
